AI Altered States
Hidden on Smartphones
Decades ago, a movie called Altered States came out (https://archive.org/details/AlteredStatesKenRussell1980AngeeParaZoowoman.website). The movie centers on finding alternative worlds and altered worlds through conscience experiments (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altered_States). It fits in the dark, science fiction genre.
People are playing with Artificial Intelligence, commonly known with AI. The imagery and sound created use to be minimal but now whole music videos are being made with such technology. Powerful AI is doing calculations which would take a life time to do. Many have expressed dangers such as IBM (https://www.ibm.com/think/insights/10-ai-dangers-and-risks-and-how-to-manage-them). AI appears to need to be carefully monitored.
However, AI is just creeping in everywhere. The other day, I took a photo of the prices at a gas station. Later, I decided to share with friends. I noticed there was on option to “remix” the photo. I clicked on it and it has me to describe the “fix”, if you will. So I typed in “nicer”. Below is the result.
Can you tell which is the original and which once was altered? Notice the trees, clouds, and the prices as well as the sky?
Fortunately, the software does leave a signature, but I cropped it out above. The signature is an odd star as shown below. It appears in the lower, right corner of the altered image.
Considering how people trust photos on social media, this should raise concern. The potential for fraud is immense.
