As Brinker Harding and Brett Lindstrom battle to be the Republican candidate in the Nebraska Congressional District 2 race, Democrats smell blood in the water or, actually, money. So many candidates are running because lots of money wants Democrats to take control of Congress away from Republicans. Blue Dot Omaha has brought in the money.
Former Omaha Mayor candidate Mike McDonnell said it best: ”For Omaha, the city I love and have called home for 58 years, it brings tremendous national attention, is impactful on our local economy and forces Presidential candidates to make their case to all Nebraskans, instead of just flying over and disregarding us. (https://www.wowt.com/2024/09/23/nebraska-senator-mike-mcdonnell-will-not-vote-winner-take-all/)”
But, currently, eyes have moved away from Nebraska to Texas. Gerrymandering has been around for a long time and has been exploited by both political parties. However, with the Apportionment Acts of 1911 and 1929, the process is worse and has distorted the way Congress performs by capping the House of Representatives to 435 members (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reapportionment_Act_of_1929). In 1911, the US population was 93 million, and 121 million in 1929. Today, the US population is about 341 million. (Raising the cap to 445 might relieve the problem some.) More people represented by fewer Congressional members is going to wide distortions particularly in a diverse economy.
Yet, the states have the power to set Congressional Districts. Governor Abbott of Texas has a redistricting proposal (https://www.texastribune.org/2025/08/01/texas-redistricting-gop-gains/ and https://www.houstonchronicle.com/projects/2025/redistricting-texas-districts-map/), and Democrat Representatives have fled the state because Republicans will gain congressional districts. This is why Beto O’Rourke from Texas came to Omaha to rant an apocalytical speech (https://rightcheer.com/beto-orourke-and-the-populist-push-for-power/).
Here are what the maps look like (taken from link above). Currently, San Antonio and Austin have a Congressional district covering both cities:
The proposal removes the absurd Gerrymandering and eliminates Democrat Congressional district as shown below:
In addition, the proposal creates two new Black majority districts when there were none previously.
This means even if Democrats win the Second Congressional District in Nebraska, they will still lose the House to Republicans. Yet, they will easily outspend Republicans by about 2 to 1 because they have no other options.
However, in Omaha and Douglas County, Republicans have to really start upping the ante on registering people Republican if they are going to retain the Second Congressiaonal seat. Democrats still edge out Republicans in Douglas County.
If Republicans are to win, they have to teach economics in a different language and that language is Spanish. I have visited numerous organizations from The Atlas Society, Heritage Foundation, and Mises Institute, and yet none of them have any publications in Spanish. The Ayn Rand Institute does offer Rand’s work in Spanish (https://estore.aynrand.org/collections/ayn-rand-en-espanol) but it is nearly impossible to find on their website without help of AI. If such publications were shared with Spanish-speakers, they would have entry into a freer world.
Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist (https://www.dsausa.org/statements/dsa-npc-statement-on-zohran-mamdanis-primary-win/), stands a good chance of becoming Mayor of New York. Many understandably blame rank choice voting (https://vote.nyc/RankedChoiceVoting). However, merely his ideas should have no influence over people if people understood the values of capitalism. More education in the right language would stop much of this socialist drift.
