Update 3: McCarthy supports Jim Jordan.
Update 2: Congressman Flood, former speaker of the Nebraska Unicameral.
Update: Keep in mind, the Nebraska Republican Party supported Congressman Jim Jordan for House Speaker.
The average person does not know what the Democrat party is trying to do in Congress. For decades, Democrats in Congress have blocked any and all Republican legislation. Democrats blame and defame Republicans for everything yet Democrats take no responsibility for any of the damage they have done. For the last two decades, Congress has passed Continual Resolutions and Omnibus bills, increasing the debt without knowing where the spending is going. The normal process of Congressional review of passing appropriation bills and vetting them is gone and no longer exists in any form.
Republicans are not much better. Conservatives will push for ideas 1, 2, and 3. Yet most elected Republican congressmen will say, “Democrats won’t vote for 1 or 2 or 3. Let us take a look at what Democrat legislation we can support” which moves the country further to the left and overspending. If a Republican insists on doing anything different, they will be framed as an extremist and blocked, if not by Democrats, by Republicans.
If the Democrat leadership wanted bi-partisanship and wanted to pass their bills in normal order, they should have advised Democrats to either abstain or not show up to vote for House Speaker. This would have lowered the voting threshold and allowed McCarthy to remain speaker. Democrats should have done this for McCarthy because he is so inept in negotiating which would have been to Democrat advantage. But Democrats wanted something bigger. They want Omnibus bills and Continuing Resolutions because such measures are barely reviewed nor subjected to much public scrutiny. If Republicans object and the government shuts down, the media will blame Republicans, not the Democrats and their tactics. So Democrats threw bi-partisanship aside and pushed the narrow Republican majority into conflict.
If McCarthy had skills, he would not have agreed to all of Congressman Gaetz’s demands and would have taken more time to get elected speaker, but he did not. This bothered me as the process seemed rushed. But soon people would forget all this until Gaetz challenged McCarthy for removal.
I expected Congressman Bacon to stay calm even when he was upset with what happened to McCarthy. But Bacon ended up stooping to Gaetz’s level and pulling the same tactics against Congressman Jim Jordan as a matter of selfish revenge, even after McCarthy made an impassioned speech to elect Jordan.
Very difficult to determine what happens in Congress now. However, I no longer understand what Bacon stands for. I will no longer support him and I will not vote for him. Castigate me if you must, but Jim Jordan would have been a capable speaker. There is just no valid reason for Bacon to vote against Jordan and Bacon is among a small minority in doing so, but he will talk of numbers from closed meetings. No way of knowing if he is skewing the facts.
Tony Vargas will likely become Congressman unless Bacon can convince Democrats to vote for him or unless a strong Republican routes Bacon out in the primary. Hard to tell. Election day is over a year away.
We need to find a strong conservative to primary Bacon to have any chance in the Fall. Vargas will destroy Bacon at this point. Like you, I can no longer hold my nose with Bacon.
Luckily I am in District 1 so ... I think we are looking at this all wrong. As a recovering member of the Libertarian Party - now an anarchist - I fully support his move to keep Congress shut down. No more spending bills for him to support, no more money for Ukraine, Israel, Hamas or the military industrial complex. I just do not see the problem wit government shut downs. I keep asking has this shut down of Congress affected you in any way? I have yet to get a answer. Even if I was still a Libertarian I would support this shutdown as an anarchist I hope it lasts at least until 2025 long would be a beautiful thing. I think we would find that these idiots are stifling us and that is a positive
