Recently, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has provided body cameras for all their officers and deputies (https://thereader.com/2022/10/12/body-worn-cameras-for-county-corrections-provide-transparency-and-safety-officials-say/).
The use of the body-cameras should help law enforcement to discipline themselves are work harder to de-escalate tense situations. At the same time, unruly suspects will have their behavior exposed, and protect law enforcement from hearsay allegations.
However, the cameras are still not much of a defense against predatory race-hustlers. These hustlers seek to find any interaction between the races and spin any conflict into supposed proof of white brutality and exploit such conflicts for money and fame. Law enforcement has become a prime target of such exploits. Conservatives David Horowitz recently wrote a book on the topic; I Can’t Breathe (https://horowitzfreedomcenterstore.org/products/i-cant-breathe-how-a-racial-hoax-is-killing-america)
Unfortunately, cameras can be circumvented by people pushing alternate narratives. Candace Owens of the Daily Wire has done a great with her film The Greatest Lie Ever Sold (https://www.dailywire.com/videos/the-greatest-lie-ever-sold) exposing what actual police cameras show versus what the news media fed the public based on a different, but singular video. The film covers Black Lives Matter exploitation of the George Floyd incident.
When these conflicts hit the media, I dive down to primary sources and others searching for primary facts. One of the primary sources is video from police body cameras which the news media ignored
In the George Floyd incident, body cams reveal disparities in the common narrative. Here is a list:
1. Floyd made no effort to flee the crime scene
2. Floyd demonstrated paranoia, claustrophobia, and panic
3. Floyd admitted to “hooping”, a way of inducing drugs
4. At no time did officers use any racial slurs
5. Floyd resisted efforts to be placed in a police car
6. Floyd asked to be laid on the ground
7. Chauvin’s knee was on Floyd’s shoulder, not neck
The news media seldom clarified facts. The use of the knee is an accepted practice of the Minneapolis Police and appears in their training manuals which was never explained. Attempts to paint officer Chauvin as a racist, ignore the fact his ex-wife is Hmong which is rarely mentioned (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Chauvin). The Minneapolis Police Station was set on fire in protest of Floyd’s death (https://www.wsj.com/articles/minneapolis-protests-over-george-floyd-death-escalate-and-spread-11590676810) leading to claims of mob justice.
Chauvin’s lawyers were incompetent and the resulting conviction is a miscarriage of justice. This is not to say Chauvin is innocent but to take issue with multiple pile-on of convictions which stray from the facts. My point here is the police cameras won’t matter if news media dismiss them or are only fed transcripts.
