Moderate Republicans Have Been Outflanked

Poor Congressman Bacon! He is lost in so much fog. You can hear it in his exasperation of McCarthy losing the House speakership (https://www.3newsnow.com/news/political/bacon-wants-bipartisanship-after-mccarthy-ouster-were-going-to-let-a-crazy-eight-people-drive-him-out).

Democrats rarely have to fight for anything. They can count on Republicans to compromise before negotiations ever begin. Years ago, I tried to explain to Congressman Lee Terry of his need to understand economic issues and vote differently, but his mind had already been captured by what lobbyists told him. Now, Congressman Bacon is stuck in the same scenario. He is attacking Republicans instead of taking on Democrats who claimed to be bipartisan.

McCarthy is seriously inept and is his own worst enemy. If Bacon wanted to save McCarthy, he could have told Democrats, if they do not side with McCarthy, they would get a more “conservative” House speaker. Yet no such strategy or such thoughts were in play. But apparently McCarthy did not want Democrats help.

For his lack of strategizing, Congressman Bacon now engages in rear view mirror retribution of Republicans, not Democrats! Welcome to the circular firing squad! His attacks appear to reflect the “donor class” (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/the-gop-race-and-the-donor-class).

Bacon is part of the Problem Solver Caucus, a bipartisan group of Congressman (https://problemsolverscaucus.house.gov/members). Yet the Democrats in this Caucus voted to vacate McCarthy. This has shocked Republican members of this Caucus and may lead to the demise of this Caucus (https://hotair.com//ed-morrissey/2023/10/04/frog-meets-scorpion-house-republicans-threaten-to-quit-problem-solvers-caucus-after-mccarthy-ouster-n582302). And McCarthy allies now try to make up for Bacon and his Main Street Republican friends by going after Democrats (https://newrepublic.com/post/175967/mccarthy-allies-mchenry-revenge-democrats-offices-pelosi-hoyer).

Congressman Gaetz may have made some outlandish stances, but he is focused on the runaway debt of the US Government which grows with Continuing Resolutions and Omnibus bills. Merely paying interest on the debt is turning out to be a major government expense and will likely soon exceed military spending. Attack Gaetz all you want but he stuck to his guns and made all the moderates look foolish.
