At one time or another, many people have heard of Prospect Hill Cemetery (https://www.prospecthillomaha.org/), a very old Omaha cemetery with numerous historical figures buried there (https://www.prospecthillomaha.org/tour). Yet, there are many undiscovered and unmarked graves, lost at least partially to time. Some of these unmarked graves are US veterans.
According to the trustees, 74 veterans have been identified as needing government grave markers. Nine of those need replacement grave markers, while the rest have no grave markers at all! Prospect Hill members are actively working with the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Douglas County Veterans Services, as well as heritage organizations, in recruiting volunteers and collecting information to have these veterans recognized with proper grave stones. The cemetery does have many records of those buried but understand who those people are can be a serious challenge.
As challenging as the task is, the search and efforts have yielded results. Eight new grave markers have been delivered and have or are being installed. The latest installments have been for Samuel Christie, Thaddeus Clarkson, and John Allen. Many more on the way.
If you want to get a close up experience of what is at Prospect Hill, there is no better opportunity compared to being at their Memorial Day Observance on May 26 at 10:45 AM (https://www.prospecthillomaha.org/event-details-registration/memorial-day-observance-2025).
