UPDATE: I probably should have prefaced this piece by pointing out the problem of picking up a random dog from a shelter, but suddenly I recall how Omaha’s own Mayor got a broken back walking her dogs (https://www.3newsnow.com/news/local-news/mayor-stothert-released-from-hospital).
No one, absolutely no one will talk about it. In fact, it is the number one topic no commentator will approach. Dogs are awful animals and their owners are often worse! There, I have said it.
Yes, owning a loyal dog can be fun and of great joy, but if you are not very responsible with it, you are bringing misery to others. Much, much, misery. I will exempt those who know why they chose the dog they did and know the responsibilities within. A retired senior with a dog can easily take care of the dog and keep it out of the way of others. A hunter and his hunting dog are geared to the field and also know the limitations and expectations.
But as for the rest of the dog owners, they own dogs because they are emotional wimps for cuteness. “Oh, he is a rescue dog! Isn’t he so cute?” Sorry, my opinion is already made up as it barks, barks, and barks some more. People in urban areas are often the worst offenders. They buy a dog, but because they spend a lot of time at work, the dog becomes lonely. So what do they do? Buy another dog! Merely to keep the first dog company. If you know people doing this, you have to convince them, they have no sense of the meaning of being a responsible dog owner.
I had a long-running battle with a neighbor. I could not identify them, but I knew their dog all too well. At 3 in the morning, the dog would randomly bark because it was lonely. It was not barking at anything, just barking. It became so annoying, I had to contact numerous authorities to take action. What a pain.
But the misery does not end there. Postal carriers are given pepper spray to ward off angry dogs. However, pepper spray is not very effective, particularly for a dog who has become used to it. If the postal carrier cannot get past the dog, they won’t deliver the mail. I had this happen because some idiotic dog owner did not have proper fencing for their dog and it would escape and harass the postal carrier. The end result is many neighbors did not get their mail.
Trust me, you have no idea what happens when your dog escapes. Many owners will say, “well, it was only one time”. Not so. If the dog figures out how to escape once, they have figured out how to escape many times and they may learn how to avoid being detected, by merely returning home before discovery.
Other dog owners get annoyed as well. You are trying to walk your dog and someone else has a dog who is either seeking a mate or perceives your dog as a threat. Suddenly, you have to find a way to pull your dog away without inconvenience or becoming a spectacle to the people around you. It is not easy.
Yet another example: parents who want to prevent their kids from being exposed to pornography, but they own a dog which unlocks the imagination. Child psychologists and social workers have so many interesting and vulgar stories to tell. When a mother discovers her very young son and his friend were performing oral sex on each other and asks for an explanation, the son said, “Well, we are not like the dog which can lick itself.” Oh, and dare I mention dogs are known for humping people? Suddenly, dogs drinking toilet water seems too lame to mention. Dare I mention dogs eat feces (https://www.amazon.com/Other-Useless-Information-Animal-Kingdom-ebook/dp/B003NX75T0)?
In Omaha, I witnessed a couple place their dog in a grocery cart, enter the grocery store, and proceeded to shop. I complained to the manager who said because of ADA (American Disabilities Act) he could not do anything. This was proof of his incompetence. The store can forbid the shopping carts from being used to carry living animals. Obviously, if the dog needs to ride in a shopping cart, it is not a service animal. These exploitations of laws regarding service animals is another reason I hate dogs.
The other problem is allergies. Dog owners think they should be able to take their dogs anywhere, but they have little respect for those who have allergies. For hotels, this is a constant battle. The law sides with service animals, but it comes at the expense of those allergic to such animals. Also, dogs can spread diseases but nobody is talking about that either.
At least cats are above much of this, but they are forest animals which need to perch and their litter boxes are disgusting as is their shedding of fur. They are rarely service animals. They do bite and scratch their owners. Yet, few complain about cats.
If you are a dog owner and have heard of complaints about your dog, take the complaints seriously and as sincere. You may merely hear one complaint, but dozens of others may have the same complaint but are afraid to tell you. If you ignore such concerns, you put your dog at risk for being poisoned. Dogs are easy to poison and the crime of poisoning them is hard to detect. Since complaints about dogs are often dismissed, some people will result to poisoning a dog. Such poisonings are common but hard to detect.
You’re a sicko.
