The Flatwater Free Press put out this latest article about Hispanic Nebraska (https://flatwaterfreepress.org/nebraska-evolving-the-perception-is-that-smaller-communities-are-dying-the-reality-many-are-growing-for-one-reason-immigration/). While the article presents some interesting facts, the use of terms “non-Hispanic white” and “persons of color” is as racist as racist gets.
Sorry, but Hispanics are as American as apple pie from St. Augustine, Florida (https://www.history.com/news/st-augustine-first-american-settlement), to San Francisco, California (https://www.history.com/topics/us-states/san-francisco). The bias stems from persistent anti-Catholic attitudes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Catholicism_in_the_United_States) which previously focused on hating Irish (https://www.history.com/news/when-america-despised-the-irish-the-19th-centurys-refugee-crisis), Greeks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Greek_sentiment) and Italians (https://www.history.com/news/the-grisly-story-of-americas-largest-lynching). This bias is the persistent prejudice of protestants, Jews, atheists and other secular groups whose bias is formed by ignorance and conspiracy theories. The latest version of this is the anti-school choice ballot issue (https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/07/17/petitions-turned-in-seeking-to-stop-nebraskas-redesigned-school-choice-law/).
Hispanics are not a racial group but an ethnic group with a unique language, their own version of Catholicism and unique take on foods, and they succeed. Americans will rightly look to the Anglo Saxons such as the Pilgrims and Quakers who colonized and formed what would become the United States of America, but Hispanics have been here for a very long time and are part of American heritage. Hispanics have intermarried with other groups and contributed to American culture and institutions.
Perhaps I have the Flatwater Press wrong but I am angered by the tone of the article. When Trump or other conservatives speak about illegal immigration, the default opposition is to accuse them of racism. However, many Hispanics oppose illegal immigration and consider it unfair to those who followed the law, and illegal entries tarnishes the image of Hispanics.
Yes, the USA immigration system is broken, but the problems for average citizens are serious. Cash Jordan, a YouTuber, has exposed such problems for some time. The broken system is why so many now are far more adamant in opposing illegal immigration. See for yourself.
That publication once “quoted” me without ever speaking to me. They are trash.
