College students have settled in. New neighbors are discovered. Organizations reorient to the new season and orient and initiate new members. Now is a good time to take some civil actions with those you meet, such as voter registration.
Yes, candidate recruitment is crucial but candidates without voters lose. I had asked a Republican candidate what they were doing to recruit minority voters. They stated they were working in north and south Omaha. This did not impress me. Nebraska has citizens who recently immigrated from India, Jordan, Nigeria, Iran, and more, with various religions of Hindu, Christian, and Muslim. These immigrants are more conservative compared to the average citizen and should be registered Republicans but many have not been asked to register to vote. Their conservative viewpoints are particularly true on the issue of transgender surgeries on minors. The failure to appeal to such conservative minority groups is why Douglas County Democrat voter registration exceeds Republican registration.
So now you should start asking around, particularly since school choice will likely be on the ballot, if people are registered to vote. Most people will tell you they are, but follow the question up with: do you know of anyone who is not registered to vote or who recently moved? Enlist them to inquire further in getting people registered to vote. Also, if you are a former candidate, you can help by contacting your former supporters and enlisting them to do some inquisitive voter registration efforts.
At the same time, when people tell you they are registered to vote, ask them if they are registered Republican. If they say “no”, convince them to register Republican. Right now, in Douglas County, there are over 1,000 voters who a registered non-partisan simply because they some archaic gripe with the Republican party. One such voter said he did it because he merely received too many calls from the Republican Party! This does not surprise me as the political parties tend to ignore nonpartisans as they have a strong tendency not to vote at all. How much of this is just a self-fulfilling prophecy? Perhaps Republicans need to make more contact with nonpartisan voters.
In Nebraska, you can help get people to register to vote by merely directing them to the Secretary of State's site at https://www.nebraska.gov/apps-sos-voter-registration/ In fact, I just sent the link in a text to one of my neighbors to get him registered.
At the same time, people moving to Nebraska should make a point of canceling their voter registration in other states to prevent voter fraud. Scott Presler of Early Vote Action (https://earlyvoteaction.com/) has been recommending voters take such option.
I still have to figure out how to make sure that I'm no longer registered to vote in Colorado.
