The Unicameral session in 2023 has the best and the absolute worst in leadership skills. LB 574 should have been a typically boring bill. This legislation did not ban “gender-affirming care” or abortion, but it certainly brought out all character of many senators both good and bad. Hence, let us go over this.
First is newcomer Senator Kathleen Kauth. Unlike so many elected officials, she has amazing fortitude and integrity. This heroine has much to admire in putting forth LB 574 and standing up to the bullies and crybabies of those who opposed the bill in pushing this legislation across the finish line. Her leadership is a precious commodity sorely lacking today.
Next, we go to the most immature. whiny and annoying senator of evil and stupidity: Machela Cavanaugh. Her filibuster was not just of one piece of legislation but of all legislation, whether she agreed with it or not. Her excessive use of social media such as Twitter has shown how quickly she moves from senator to being a petulant child. She even obstructed legislation of her liberal and progressive senators including her brother John Cavanaugh who put forth good legislation to abolish home equity theft (https://www.wowt.com/2023/05/17/nebraska-lawmakers-take-up-home-equity-theft-part-tax-credit-package/). See link below how others see her.

Here is an image of her immature chanting for trans people:
The last of the moral Democrats is Senator Mike McDonnell. He supported LB 574 and did so against great adversity from his own party. He is true to his Catholic faith and upholds moral principles. He simply could have voted “present, not voting” but he did not blink or shrink from his moral principles. He is a true hero.
When in battle, the last person you want in your army is a turncoat. Enter in Senator Merv Riepe who torched his own proposed pro-life legislation. He is one of those boys who craps in the urinal for whatever reason to the disgust of the next user. Perhaps Riepe was just trying to get his butt clean. Fortunately, others intervened to bring him around, but it was all half-hearted from him.
How about a self-described witch? Senator Megan Hunt described her little caucus as the Coven Caucus (Conrad, Dey, M. Cavanaugh, and her). Her obsession with posting to Twitter (a sign of mental illness (https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2021-07-20/social-media-is-a-public-health-crisis) and exposing her child to a heated cultural battle is both sad and wicked. I am stunned more have not called her out on this matter. Also, in regard to her own child, I believe she has Munchausen syndrome by proxy (https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/munchausen-by-proxy), a disorder which places her own child at risk.
One Senator emulated so much passion, persistence, fortitude, and courage, she is a modern-day Joan of Arc. This is Senator Julie Slama. Having been hospitalized with illness and being disheveled from illness, she made her crucial vote to pass LB 574. No senator walked through illness and risk to her health as she has. A true heroine of great stature. She received support from her colleagues who shield her disheveled appearance from news cameras which is proof she inspired people to come to her defense. Such heroines inspire leadership and she noticed.
Oh, but what about the enablers of this stupidity? Enter in Senator Terrell McKinney. This Black man is the “step and fetch” to the Democrat Party which defended slavery. But in saying this, I am merely insulting a great entertainer Lincoln Perry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stepin_Fetchit). McKinney is beholden to his white progressive overseers. This man does not have an original thought at all. He should have voted "present, not voting", which would respect the diversity of opinion of people in his district, but no. He had to please his owners.
In this battle, some call for some sort of decorum or truce. Senator Danielle Conrad arose to the occasion. She represents one of the most left-leaning college towns of Nebraska, the City of Lincoln. She was among one of the first Senators who signed on to a letter requesting decorum (https://twitter.com/ketvlincoln/status/1659573629246373888).
So who is the next villain? Not Tony Vargas you say cause he signed on to the same letter as Senator Conrad, right? Wrong. In many ways, Vargas is a fake Hispanic. He was born and raised in New York City (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Vargas). He claims to be Catholic but it is a paper-thin faith to him and merely an item for his resume. His district is 43 percent Hispanic (https://nebraskalegislature.gov/media/images/maps/2021/legislature/District07.pdf). I could make a lot of generalizations, but I think it is highly unlikely Hispanics would favor gender mutilation and baby-killing. Vargas is a fake but polite guy. He is all New York progressive and nothing more.
All the twists and turns of legislation created a roller coaster effect. Abortion and the killing of children seemed to be removed from the discussion. However, Senator Ben Hansen saw an idea in the “Let Them Grow” bill, a perfect title to oppose abortion. This man is a quiet hero doing the background negotiation work to move legislation forward. Do not underestimate Hansen
And now we come to Senator Justin Wayne. Why was he not present? Illness? Family death? I really don’t know. I hope he was working on the Underground Railroad out of the progressive Democrat Party. But, I fear, he demonstrated the most pathetic vices possible: cowardliness. Please note, I might be totally wrong, but this is what it looks like right now to me. Was it too much for him to vote “present but not voting”? I guess so, but why?
There are probably other heroes and villains but these are the ones which stood out to me. Feel free to comment.
I'm sorry to hear that Julie Slama is so ill. I'm glad that she made the vote. I don't think well of her for other reasons, but at least in this instance she followed through at great cost to herself.
Now; if only she finds the integrity to do the right thing in other ways too.
Very informing!
