I am still stunned by the idiotic responses to Donald J. Trump. Commentary after commentary, the lefties have never figured out how Trump was elected and why he has such a strong following.
You have to go back decades to how Bill Clinton stopped Jesse Jackson by convincing Senator Paul Simon, a competitor, not to drop out but suspend his campaign. Clinton needed to keep progressives in the party but only as a matter of useful idiots. Clinton appealed to the left but eventually moved to the center (https://edition.cnn.com/videos/politics/2013/02/11/memorable-sotu-clinton.cnn) The progressives never forgot this. Keep in mind, Trump was supportive of President Clinton. Dick Morris, a political consultant helped Clinton through the times by using a triad approach to dealing with issues.
Years later, Hillary would run in 2008 against rising Barack Obama, and push the birth certificate issue. She could not sideline Obama and his progressive support, but in 2016, she did sideline Bernie Sanders with the use of super delegates. This is why so many blue-collar workers walked out of the Democrat Party and began a long questioning over what narratives they had been sold over many decades.
The Democrat Party had moved so far to the left, yet the Republican Party kept on compromising with the Democrats. At the same time, Obama could not pivot and pushed climate change, just as Al Gore and even John McCain had. Blue collar workers knew something was wrong with the whole process. In walks Donald J. Trump and steals away former Obama and Sanders supporters. The conservatives in the Republican party freaked out (such as Sasse) as many of these Trump supporters were not bonafide credentialed conservatives.
Trump is the most masterful and consequential politician over the last 100 years. He knows how to pivot. He takes his adversaries seriously. He speaks his mind without a filter which emboldens his authenticity. Like Presidents Clinton and Reagan, he has a gift for oratory and extemporaneous speaking. The framing of his rhetoric is decisively persuasive to those who he needs to persuade while attacking and isolating those who oppose him.
To the Democrats and particularly Hillary Democrats, his move into the Republican Party is flat-out betrayal and treason. This is why the hatred for Trump is so intense, unhinged, and over the top. The Democrats want revenge over what Republicans did to President Clinton over the Lewinski scandal years ago and much more. But Trump will come back, but not under “yes, we can” but “yes, we did and will do again”. Trump succeeds because he knows all the Democrat strategies and how to push against such tactics.
What is the solution for these factional, partisan, and divisional times? I recommend Congress go back to reading George Washington’s Farewell Address. Washington rightly warned about factionalism and division and Congress would make a point of reading his Address but Congress stopped reading it decades ago. I think this tradition needs to carry on again https://history.house.gov/Historical-Highlights/1951-2000/The-reading-of-George-Washington-s-Farewell-Address-on-the-House-Floor/. This would cause Congress to think about their aggressive political tactics and unjust allegations of their opposition.
All aside, Dick Morris has put out a new book on Trump, The Return (https://www.booksamillion.com/p/Return-Trumps-Big-Comeback/Dick-Morris/9781630062071) If you want to dive into the Trump World, try this discussion site at
