Update: If we look at the City partisan count, it is far more favorable to Democrats. from https://www.votedouglascounty-ne.gov/vr_counts.aspx

Matt Johnson of RightCheer.com did a report of the Omaha Mayoral race with details on those choosing between Mike McDonnell and Jean Stothert (https://rightcheer.com/the-strange-bedfellows-of-the-omaha-mayors-race/). While the article is interesting, it only reflects on the internal turmoil among Republicans, not the larger Democrat and nonpartisan politics which dominate Omaha politics. Also, while conservatives want to support the most conservative candidate possible, the voter partisan registration has not changed much in favor of Republicans.
I have repeatedly mentioned Republicans need to do voter registration operations, particularly at churches and gun ranges. Yet, such efforts come up short. So why conservatives will focus on gun issues and school choice, the conservative candidates they want to support are not bringing in the voters.
I think Stothert will win because she does well with the most local of issues. For example, she changed the way Omaha collects trash and recycling. To the political partisans, this does not matter but to the over 90,000 non-partisan voters, it is a big deal.
Yet, many of my conservative friends favor McDonnell for being pro-life, pro-gun and pro-school choice. But these issues nearly sinks his entire campaign from the starting gates as the teachers’ unions and abortion supporters, who are largely consolidated in Omaha’s urban center, will evisicerate him on election day.
I suppose some Democrats will vote for McDonnell simply because of his union past but I doubt this is enough to swing the far left partisans. I hate to sound so cynical. But, no matter who you choose for mayor, please do not be overly idealistic about the outcome as you are likely to be setting yourself up for disappointment.
It matters that Republicans step up and get out and VOTE. If you don't vote, then--your vote will definitely not be counted.
