Many years ago, I kept seeing antisemitism on the political left, particularly on topics of capitalism and American foreign policy. This was most evident among progressives. Somehow, through censorship and disguise, a “politically correct” form of antisemitism emerged and expanded on the left, particularly in regard to Israel. Yet, time and time again, all sorts of pundits pointed to racism on the political right, ignoring the fact freedom of speech is tolerated by conservatives. When conservatives spotted antisemites, conservatives exposed them and humiliated them.
Omaha has had a few anti-Semitic incidents such as a swastika burned into the lawn at Memorial Park (https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/07/23/swastika-burned-into-grass-at-park-that-honors-us-war-dead/ ). A few years back, pro-Palestine activists protested the Douglas County Republican Party Independence Day pancake breakfast as well as other such protests (https://www.noiseomaha.com/news-now/2021/5/16/as-the-bombardment-of-gaza-by-israel-continues-omaha-locals-stand-in-solidarity).
But thus came October 7 with the Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians. Suddenly, many seemed to care about Palestinians. Protests appeared in Omaha (https://www.wowt.com/video/2023/10/20/pro-palestine-protest-held-outside-omaha-central-high-school/ and https://www.wowt.com/video/2023/10/13/university-nebraska-omaha-students-hold-pro-palestine-rally/ and https://www.wowt.com/2023/10/13/dozens-hold-pro-palestinian-demonstration-omaha/) Students from Omaha Central High School, people from UNO as well as Nebraskans for Peace took to the streets. Somehow, only a few are concerned about the Americans slaughtered and others taken hostage.
Nebraska State Senator Megan Hunt commented about the situation on X (formerly Twitter) and was rapidly rebuked by Nebraska Congress Mike Flood and reposted by Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon. Hunt clearly does not understand what is in the Oslo Agreement.
Realistically, however, these protests are largely about hating Jewish peoples (https://www.meforum.org/65131/stop-calling-them-pro-palestine-rallies) while failing to condemn mass murder. If there were any concerns about Palestinians, all eyes would be on defeating Hamas and expressing concerns about the Oslo Agreement and the supposed “Two State” solution going away. Gaza was given autonomy and voted Hamas into power. Hamas purged the opposition and went on a massacre. Senator Hunt does not understand. The future is bleak for any thoughts of Palestine State.
Hamas is evil and more need to condemn them for taking hostages. Israel started taking down Hamas and warned Gaza civilians to evacuate and move south to avoid bombings. Hamas blocked the way of civilians.
So the question must be asked: who is oppressing whom? Who defends Palestinians? Certainly not Hamas.
On I24 they showed IDF leaders asking those in the Gaza leaving to wave white flags so as to ensure they would not be accidentally shot by the IDF as they were leaving. Later they showed those with white flags in their hands being shot by Hamas snipers. They are truly evil.
