Professor Ari Kohen, a University of Nebraska at Lincoln professor, most certainly has thin skin. He is also as far left as you can go on the political spectrum. He is Jewish and claims to publish on the Holocaust. And, he is on X, formerly Twitter (https://twitter.com/kohenari)
Apparently, State Senator Rob Clements used a shofar, an ancient musical instrument often used by religious Jews, in some sort of presentation. Well, Professor Kohen objected to such usage on X (formerly Twitter): ”Let’s think seriously together for a moment about the reaction we’d witness if people randomly appropriated for their own political ends the religious ritual objects of any other group.”. Kohen has a rage against conservatives taking on the educational system. He further stated , “Come for the dangerous right wing extremism of Kirk Penner, Kathleen Kauth, and Linda Vermonter. Stay for the gross cultural and religion appropriation of State Senator Rob Clements.”
I replied on X “Stop being silly. I suppose you are going to attack Christians for "appropriating" Jewish names such as Ezekiel, Rebecca and Benjamin. Get real! Jewish people are part of the American tapestry and even fought in the Revolutionary War.”
For this, he blocked me. I guess he is not a Jewish intellectual interested in an argument, unlike my Jewish friends from debate class decades ago.
Kohen appears to be part of this idiocy opposed to cultural appropriation. Perhaps he should stop appropriating the English language and post instead in Hebrew or Yiddesh. After all, Jews did not create English. Sorry, dude! You are in America! There is no demarcation line for culture and to do so is racist and bigoted. Oh, and while I am at it, am I being racist for using English as it is exclusionary to those who don’t know English?!?!
But to the point, Kohen does not understand the basics of America. Ever since Pennsylvania, under William Penn, passed the Charter of Privileges in 1701 (https://philadelphiaencyclopedia.org/essays/pennsylvania-charter-of-privileges/), freedom of religion has progressed. However, in many ways, people like Kohen allow recent history to wipe out the deep past, merely to praise victimology and use it as a political weapon. With the use of the kosfar, how could any Jewish person miss the point: imitation is the most sincerest of flattery? Christians are constantly referring to texts of the Torah, replicated as the Old Testament of the Bible. Why is Kohen being so fussy about this? Intolerance perhaps?
For example, Edward Rosewater from Bohemia, (now Czech Republic) is known by some Nebraskans but should be known by all. He was the founder of the Omaha Bee newspaper, but he was also a Republican! Rosewater joined the U.S. Military Telegraphic Corps during the Civil War and accompanied Generals Fremont and Pope on the Virginia Campaigns of 1862. Under President Lincoln, Rosewater telegraphed Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1963 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/8573204/edward-rosewater). However, there is no monument to him or street named after him (A school was but it was turned into apartments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosewater_School). His brother Andrew made some of the earliest maps of Omaha. Why can’t we honor such history? The education system isn’t yet Kohen apparently defends such a flawed system.
Anyways, since Kohen cannot spell the name of Vermooten as seen above, I have decided to give money to her campaign and so can you at https://www.lindafornebraska.com/ Suck it up buttercup!
I agree. I absolutely accept this use of the shofar as a compliment. By all means, appropriate! Appropriate! Take whatever you want!
I was at the event. Senator Clements spoke of the fact that we are now in a spiritual battle (which i agree) and the Jews, before battle, would blast the shofar. Senator Clements also blasts it just before the start of every Unicameral session, which Ari knows, so he will be doing it again from the Rotunda in January 2024. Ari is grabbing at straws, because he knows what a formidable candidate Linda is.
