So apparently the organization, Paid Sick Leave for Nebraskans, is pushing a petition to force employers to provide “sick time” (https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/07/18/petition-drive-kicks-off-to-put-paid-sick-leave-on-nebraska-ballot/). I am struggling to find out how this is an issue when the vast majority of businesses have phased out sick time in favor of paid time off.
Aaron Sanford of the Nebraska Examiner did the story at the link previously provided and stated: ”The 250,000 Nebraskans working full-time without paid sick days might soon have other choices than ignoring illness or sending sick kids to school to avoid missing a day’s pay.” without any citation of fact. Where is the source for this stuff? I simply cannot find it nor the justification for such a petition.
The reality is this. Employers phased out sick time off because employees seldom used it and would fake illness to get it. Employers also abandoned sick time because they did not want to engage in the practice of surveillance to find out if the employees were telling the truth over being sick. Better to offer employees generous amounts of paid time off instead of sick time (https://www.griffinbenefits.com/blog/the-importance-of-paid-time-off-as-an-employee-benefit).
There are other problems as well. What if your dog is sick? You cannot use sick pay for that, but you can use paid time off! So who were the dog-hating idiots who came up with this petition? There are many Nebraskans who choose to live in poverty because they insist on supporting their dog or should I say: dogs. If the petition was about ensuring employers provide some minimum paid time off, it would at the very least, make some constructive sense. But, this is not what the petition is about.
Let me add one other problem with these meddling petitions between workers and employers, they are emboldening the robots. Nebraska raised the minimum wage, and grocery stores consolidated and closed, and self-checkout stands became common. The robots are winning because they do not need sick time, rest, vacation time, minimum wage, social security, and Medicare. The robots are rapidly replacing us. Perhaps you will retire before all this becomes obvious when ChatGPT takes over. The birth of Skynet is likely to happen. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet_(Terminator))!
