Update from Flatwater Free Press, they put out articles of various sizes and the Nebraska Examiner republished a shorter version.
Hard to tell how to start. Matt Wynn and his Flatwater Free Press aims for local stories. In covering the public showing of the movie “The Mind Polluter”, writer Carson Vaughan could not get the interviews needed and ended up citing the dubious Southern Poverty Law Center in his article (https://flatwaterfreepress.org/minds-polluted-film-claims-teachers-are-grooming-students-experts-say-its-filled-with-falsehoods/). The film is about the current trends in sex education.
I believe Vaughn was upset in not getting a word out of Mark Bonkiewicz of Nebraskans for Founders Values and others but I suspect this is because Flatwater Press was not well known to the individuals rejecting interviews. Sorry, Wynn, only your left-wing supporters, and former World-Herald colleagues know of your efforts. (So, I am going to help cover what Carson could not and hopefully bridge a gap.)
The Nebraska Examiner edited out the more egregious parts of the article and published it at https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/07/18/minds-polluted-new-film-making-rounds-in-nebraska-is-filled-with-falsehoods-education-experts-say/ As for the film, The Mind Polluters, the film gets a B minus to a C from me for conflating too many issues and engaging in sensational “Christian porn” as well as letting talking heads say stuff with no authority or citation to do so. (You can see the film at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/themindpolluters/649144156)
In fact, between the film and the reactions to it, there is more mud being thrown instead of any clarity or discussion. Public schools used to be about grades 1 through 8: teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. Those children who learned the discipline of being a student and had talent would progress to high school. Today, schools are concentration camps trying to mainstream the deviants as normal. This is why school shootings take place. Students who do not have the discipline to be students should be expelled and sent to work but entrapped in school, they take revenge on the schools.
Many educators will take offense to what I just said but think about this. Many parents treat schools as merely babysitting services and don’t care what the results are. However, for responsible parents, schools are not respecting boundaries and expanding to do what schools were not supposed to do in the first place. Face facts, the most loving act a parent can do for a child is to make them lunch, yet now the public schools are giving away free lunch to all kids. The schools are slowly turning into boarding schools. Many teachers, educators, and administrators know there is a limit as to what the schools can do but the pressure is always on to do more and the result is a polymorphic monstrosity.
Sex education for minor students should be a simple, age-appropriate, three-day seminar, not a full-year lecture on sperm and gender dysphoria. Young people face many diverse issues with puberty which simply are not appropriate for class discussion but require private consultation. Why did sex education become such a focal point when reading and math scores are so bad? Has this had an impact on how students and teachers view each other? Has such sex courses sold an idea of anything goes?
The idea of compulsory high school education is wrong, dated, and a failed model. After Eighth grade, there needs to be more emphasis on a work ethic and trade schools and helping young people become employed and responsible citizens. The fact we have to have such discussions and encounter these problems with our public schools is the reason many, myself included, have called for the separation of school and government. The film goes a bit overboard with the whole “grooming” thing. However, child molesting teachers do exist in Nebraska (https://nebraska.tv/archive/lincoln-teacher-arrested-for-sexual-assault-09-11-2016and https://omaha.com/news/courts/morton-middle-school-teacher-accused-of-sexual-assault-of-a/article_c416808d-4f48-5397-b852-45d8679f13a9.html) Such cases is why many are questioning what is taught in sex education and why is it a year long seminar?
