Talking about stepping into it. Attorney General Bondi seems sorely disconnected from reality regarding the Epstein files. She has played the circus act and people are rightfully angry. She is becoming a liability to the Trump Administration.
Yet, some key facts must be made clear. Jeffrey Epstein was convicted of procuring a minor for prostitution in 2008 after an investigation started in 2005. Part of the agreement with prosecutors sealed victims information and evidence. This is a key part to all the allegations and suspicions about Epstein. He was arrested again in 2019 on similar charges at the Federal level, and died the same year in what is best described as negligent manslaughter, over five years ago.
Also, the allegations of blackmail are hard for a prosecutor to prove as the public has no sympathy for victims of blackmail, and often threats are empty threats. I pointed out the lack of empathy a long time ago (3 years) in an article about sexploitation and former Nebraska State Senator (https://andrewlsullivan.substack.com/p/dont-shame-the-victims-into-silence). In unsealing the documents, the Courts would be enabling the threats the blackmailer threatened to execute, which would make the Courts accomplices to the blackmailer.
With sex, the excitement of anticipation often exceeds the actual act. Role play this. You go to Epstein’s Island. You anticipate having sex with a hot-looking teen. But matching up fantasy with reality fails. Having met the “teen”, you realize you can’t go through with it, and you end up talking together about absolutely everything except sex. You talk about how beautiful the Gulf of Mexico America is. How your flight was. Not sex. Yet, Epstein now has a photo of you with her and is free to make demands of you. You are compromised.
To add, when dealing with shady people, they collect shady people as acquaintances. The “teen” as mentioned above is actually 22 years old, yet knowing what Epstein is doing in recruiting women females and the rich, financial clients he has, she smells money. She claims she is 16, which is the age of consent in most places. She merely needs to stare, smile, and play dumb — and Epstein buys it. She ends up whoring for Epstein and makes money.
Both the man and woman described above have a vested interest to prevent the unsealing of the list of names and evidence already sealed. With Epstein being dead, opening up such information is likely to cause more harm than good. The man worries about what his wife will think. The woman worries about what her children and husband will think. The past haunts them and they prefer to bury it.
There are other problems as well. How did Epstein use the information he collected? To the scenario above, what if Epstein offered to delete the files, but for $10,000? You give him the money, but he says he can’t as the price has gone up to $20,000. With Epstein’s death, the extortion ends, yet the risk of embarassment remains. Again, no one has empathy for those who are victims of blackmailing.
