Government agencies have always been meddling with the news media, including putting out false stories and trying to discourage other stories. The CIA actually had an operation called Operation Mockingbird (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Mockingbird) which started decades ago.
However, nothing can match the vast number of government agencies whom used Twitter to suppress freedom of speech, to ban tens of thousands of people, and engage in widespread falsification of information, all through Twitter and paying Twitter to do so. The impact has been global. Perhaps you have not heard of the Twitter Files as the legacy mainstream media is being silent about it. This is because they were largely co-opted by these government agencies through Twitter. Matt Taibbi has written articles on the topic (https://taibbi.substack.com/p/twitter-files-thread-the-spies-who).
Elon Musk has described Twitter as not just a company, but a crime scene, and he has been sharing the information with the public on Twitter through selected journalists. You should follow these Twitter accounts and look for the postings on the Twitter Files.

However, much of this does not surprise me. What does surprise me is how many local journalists have only one public social media account, and it is nearly always Twitter. Upon viewing their Twitter accounts, you will find they follow all the other journalists. The result, regardless of intentions, was “copy and paste” journalism heavily influenced by government agencies. A handful may have Facebook or Instagram but these social media face the same problems as Twitter. The question is to what extent? For journalists, the result was a lack of individual thought and initiative. Why ask questions when Twitter was telling you what other journalists were saying and doing? Why did these journalists not seek out using other social media? They certainly feared going against the tide of narratives being spun through Twitter by government agencies.
Whatever the rationales they make, a fishbowl was created resulting in what information could get out, and what information was barred without the vast majority knowing to what degree they were being manipulated. Anyways, here are some screenshots.

The Reader is a staple in the Omaha Metropolitan area. Still worth signing up for their email news service, but it has always had a far left-wing bent.
Nebraska Examiner following the same Twitter connections.
Flatwater Press does the same thing.
Even the Lincoln Journal Star.
