What Happened, Nebraska?
Omaha Sputterings
Strange as to what people complain about. House prices are high, but have electricity, plumbing, and central air. Are complaints really valid or are we all crybabies now? When settlers first came to the Nebraska territory, they built homes of sod, and the luxury of the time was a window frame.
Food scarcity is also mentioned, but this would have caused settlers to laugh at our situation and wonder why SNAP exists. Yet, Native Americans, Lewis and Clark, and settlers learned to find plenty of food among native plants. Many of us just refer to these plants as weeds, but dandelions, nettles, and rhubarb are all edible, although preparation is necessary for some of these to remove toxins. This video is just a sample.
There are also apples, mulberries, and, in my childhood, plums turned into jam. I can’t count how many times, as a child, I saw boys climb these trees to eat the fruits, only to be scolded by some parent or other menacing adult. The fear of natural foods has grown worst over time. Are boys even allowed to climb trees? Do they need a helmet to do so?
Today, parents of small families or of only-child parents complain about childcare, but big families of the past had no concerns as siblings and relatives watched younger ones. Today, registries of sex offenders scare people but have become a bureaucracy of names, with an infinity of lists where men in their 80s are seen as dangerous for crimes committed decades ago. How times have changed.
A violent schizophrenic woman with a knife slashes the face of a 3-year-old boy. She had a history of violence, so why was she not on a registry for violent schizophrenics? Because one does not exist. This boy could have been killed. A blade to the jugular will bleed a person to death in minutes. Yet, here we are.
