Update 2:
Update: Good has been ousted (https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4727667-bob-good-virginia-donald-trump-kevin-mccarthy-john-mcguire-freedom-caucus/).
Correction: Bob Good was endorsed by Club for Growth on May 14, 2024.
The biggest problem with Congressman Kevin McCarthy is as House Speaker, he started the circular firing squad among Congressional Republicans and it intensified under Trump. The tit-for-tat attacks continue on all sides.
When Dan Frei ran against Congressman Bacon, I supported Frei, because Frei understands what conservatives expect. Yet, Bacon has been a stalwart of McCarthy and the lobbying class who simply want the spending bills to pass. With a small number of votes, Bacon would be a better Congressman without suffering much grief, but now he has become worse as he is taking the low-road.
Congress has not been operating under their normal procedures for decades now. If Hal Daub was elected to Congress again, he would most likely be stunned and angered at how procedure has been thrown away for the sake of appeasement and buy-outs. This is what the Freedom Caucus has been trying to change and they are making progress but the McCarthy types see infringement on their power.
Bacon keeps talking about bipartisanship but this is turning out to mean shooting at his own Republican colleagues. I am ashamed of Bacon because he used to make a point of rising above the conflict and not letting it drag him down. But now, he has been in office long enough, he is feeling the benefits of seniority and views any and all challenges as a personal threat to his embolden power and ego. This became apparent with the challenges to House Speaker McCarthy.
I thought, or should I say hoped, Bacon would come back to his senses after the McCarthy controversy settled, but Dan Frei freaked him out. When Congressman Bob Good of Virginia endorsed Dan Frei, Bacon went on the attack with his allies in the Republican Mainstreet Partnership (https://www.republicanmainstreet.org/members) to take Good down. CNN covered Bacon’s approach (https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/05/politics/house-gop-primary-don-bacon/index.html). No policy, just tit-to-tat nonsense from our Nebraska Congressman.
So I thought perhaps Bacon would readjust after his own primary, but no. He is still trashing Congressman Bob Goodman in spite of his conservative record merely because he is the chair of the Freedom Caucus and endorsed Dan Frei (https://x.com/DonJBacon/status/1803272433203396754). Anyone care to talk about public policy?
Club for Growth scorecard gives a top rating to Congressman Good, but to be fair, they did not find the need to endorse Good or fund his campaign. Club for Growth will have to revisit why they did not enter this race. Yet, Bacon scores poorly with Club for Growth in comparison to Congressman Good.
At the same time, Bacon can claim Trump supported Good's opponent but Trump is a national candidate. Also Trump supported John McGuire because he attended Stop the Steal rallies in Virginia and was at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McGuire_(Virginia_politician) ) I am certain this will bring great "comfort" to all the Democrats in Omaha.
However, the real question is why did Bacon not focus on Nebraska and instead chose to worry about some guy from Virginia who failed to impact Bacon in the primary? Either he is full of vengeance or hates conservatives or perhaps both. To be very blunt, Bacon should have stayed above the fray and instead he is still getting fried. And if you still think Bacon should win, you will need to get more people to register Republican and vote in November. At the same time, just tell people to stop voting for stupid Democrats!
Petty people being petty is always wearing on the soul. I wouldn't vote for Bacon either if he was my congressman.
