Update 2. President Gerald Ford, born in Omaha, Nebraska, recognized and supported Black History Month. https://www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov/library/speeches/760074.htm
Update: Ehud Neor’s comment below reminded me, I left something out. Who should actually receive the reparations? Maybe the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
As many may already know, I have a great disdain for President Lincoln, so I passed on saying anything on President’s Day. Most historians let Lincoln hog credit for abolishing slavery while eclipsing the vast array of Republicans who were abolitionists and took action to bring slavery to an end. I can mention so many from John C. Fremont to General Benjamin Butler. Those supporting Critical Race Theory ignore these facts about the Republican Party.
However, my focus here is in regard to reparations for slavery which is gaining support (https://jonathanturley.org/2023/02/23/are-reparations-part-of-the-american-rescue-plan-cities-say-yes-and-plan-to-use-federal-funds-to-support-reparations-efforts/)
Who should really pay the Reparations? How about Anglea Davis? PBS has a new series called Finding Your Roots which is about genealogy. In this episode, progressive Angela Davis learns she has a slaveowner in her background and is a descendant of the Pilgrims who came over in the Mayflower (https://www.pbs.org/weta/finding-your-roots/watch/episodes/and-still-i-rise and https://www.today.com/popculture/tv/angela-davis-finding-your-roots-mayflower-ancestors-rcna71700). Heck, she could possibly become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution!
But seriously, Democrat Senator Cory Booker continues to push the idea of reparations for slavery (https://www.booker.senate.gov/news/press/booker-reintroduces-legislation-to-form-commission-for-study-of-reparation-proposals-for-african-americans). I think Republicans should endorse the idea and make certain only Democrats pay for it as the Democrats are the party of slavery!
Since Republicans passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution as well as passed the Anti-Ku Klux Klan Act, all Republicans should be exempted from paying for reparations. If Republicans spoke up about this, something tells me the Democrats will not be so receptive to the idea anymore.
I don't think it's Lincoln's fault that he's given sole credit for abolishing slavery, but the writers of the history books who insist on making them so dry and dull that this is the only fact that kids ever learn about it. As a former homeschooling mom, I hated those history books. History should come alive and be exciting! There are lots of really neat historical people to learn about and discoveries to explore. There is no excuse for the way our educational system has done its best to ruin what should be a fascinating and engaging topic for young people to study.
