Living in Nebraska and hearing the debates about property taxes has become so annoying, it would be a comedy if it was not real. One of the reforms passed over the last few years requires taxing entities to inform property owners of pending property tax hikes.
Oh, there is suppose to be a reduction in property taxes, but the system is way too complex and filled with holes. This has become abundantly obvious to many property owners when they receive these notices in the mail. Hard to tell if your property is a poker card or a Monopoly game playing card to trifle with.
Below is an example. In increasing a tax, the impacted taxpayer is sent this notice. The homeowner’s property evaluation has gone up by over $28,000. The result is the proposed tax increase means the overall tax goes up very dramatically. Note, the property evaluation increase impacts all the taxing entities and the taxes the impose on property owners but are not displayed here.
Recently, I posted about a candidate confronting Douglas County’s spending which contributes to the rising taxes.

But now with this proposed tax increase, people need to show up on at the Douglas County Civic Center, in the Legislative Chamber on the second floor, on September 18 at 6:00 PM to protest this idiocy. And if you cannot show up, please contact your Douglas County Commissioner. See link below to find your representative and contact information.
Public Hearings? I received a card with tax increases for the city of Ralston, the Ralston school district, and Douglas county but only one public hearing location. Shouldn’t there be a separate hearing for each entity. My taxes jumped 22% which was around $1000. The school district went up 29%.
